KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced an affordable “Madani” housing scheme that will cater to the B40 lower-income and M40 middle-income groups.
Several affordable housing developments will be available for sale and rent, Anwar announced at an event in Kepong, near here.
He said M40 households earning RM7,000 a month or less can purchase a 800 sq ft home for RM200,000 while B40 households with an income of RM5,000 a month or less can buy a 750 sq ft home for RM180,000.
Singles, newly-employed youths and young newlyweds with a maximum income of RM4,000 a month or less will also be able to purchase a 700 sq ft unit for RM150,000. Anwar also said those in the B40 and M40 groups who cannot afford to buy their own homes can rent a 700 sq ft three-room home for five years at RM600 a month.
Under the “Ihsan Madani” scheme, folk regarded as among the hardcore poor will be able to rent a 700 sq ft unit with three rooms for RM300 a month.
The project is expected to start this year.
Anwar, who is also finance minister, said homes that have been purchased cannot be sold to others and can only be passed on to family members.
“If the owner wants to sell the unit, only Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) can purchase it. This is to ensure that the development achieves its goal.”
The prime minister also announced a 25% cut in assessment fees for all affordables homes in the capital for the second half of 2023 (July to December).
He said this initiative will only apply to affordable homes built after 2014.
“This assessment fee reduction will benefit 25,677 owners of affordable homes, and involves a RM2 million reduction in tax revenue,” he added.
